CHP Cracks Down on Dangerous Driving Over July 4th Weekend

As Californians gear up for Independence Day celebrations, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is stepping up patrols across the state in an effort to keep roads safe during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

CHP’s Mission: Save Lives

The CHP's Independence Day Holiday Enforcement Period kicks off Thursday, July 3 at 6:01 p.m. and continues through Sunday, July 6 at 11:59 p.m. Officers will be out in full force, targeting dangerous driving behaviors—particularly speeding, distracted driving, and DUI.

“The goal is simple: to save lives,” the CHP said in a statement.

A recent 24-hour enforcement effort earlier this summer showed just how serious the issue is:

  • Over 12,100 drivers were cited for excessive speed

  • 860 for distracted driving

  • Nearly 500 for seat belt violations

  • Nearly 400 DUI arrests

  • Sadly, 11 people died in crashes during that single-day operation

What Drivers Need to Know

Whether you're heading to a backyard BBQ, fireworks show, or family road trip, the CHP urges drivers to:

  • Slow down

  • Buckle up

  • Stay sober

  • Stay alert behind the wheel

If you witness a dangerous situation on the road, call 911.

Why It Matters

“Reckless driving and speeding have deadly consequences,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee.
“Every driver has a responsibility to make safe choices behind the wheel.”

This year’s travel is expected to break records. According to AAA:

  • 4.3 million Southern Californians are expected to hit the road

  • Nationwide, 61.6 million Americans will travel by car—up 2% from last year

Pro Tip: Travel Early

Traffic experts from INRIX say Sunday, July 6 will likely be the most congested day of the weekend. To avoid traffic jams, plan to hit the road in the early morning hours.

Stay safe, stay smart, and enjoy a happy and healthy Independence Day weekend!

The Long Beach Symphony’s popular Instrument Petting Zoo is back and ready to inspire the next generation of music lovers!

This unique, hands-on experience brings a collection of real orchestral instruments to neighborhood libraries and community events, giving kids the exciting opportunity to touch, hear, and even play them. Guided by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers, children learn how each instrument works, how sound is created, and how each piece fits into the symphony.

After a fun and interactive demonstration, kids are encouraged to explore the instruments for themselves — from violins and trumpets to drums and flutes. It’s a perfect introduction to the magic of music and a great way to spark an early interest in learning to play.

Whether your child is curious about music or simply loves trying new things, the Instrument Petting Zoo offers an unforgettable experience that could be the start of a lifelong passion.

A new study has found that frequent, long, and irregular naps—especially in the early afternoon—may be linked to a higher risk of death in older adults.

Presented at the SLEEP 2025 conference, the study followed over 86,000 people (average age: 63) for eight years. Participants who took longer naps between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. were more likely to die during the study period. Researchers adjusted for factors like age, weight, smoking, and nighttime sleep.

Lead author Chenlu Gao of Massachusetts General Hospital emphasized that the study shows patterns of napping—not just whether someone naps—could signal future health issues. However, he stressed the findings show association, not causation.

Sleep experts note that excessive napping might reflect poor nighttime sleep or underlying health conditions like heart disease or diabetes. And since the study measured movement rather than brain activity, quiet rest might’ve been mistaken for sleep.

The takeaway? A short nap isn’t bad—but relying on long, daily naps could signal something more serious. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends keeping naps to 20–30 minutes in the early afternoon.

As always, if you're feeling unusually tired during the day, it's worth talking to a healthcare provider. Your nap habits might be telling you more than you think.
